My debts are from my pets!

Question: I have always been an animal lover. I have volunteered at animal shelters and volunteered for PETA. I started adopting animals in college and I just kept doing it. So I've adopted dogs, cats, birds, snakes, goats, horses and mice.

I have spent so much on veterinary bills that I am basically broke. I live by myself in Roswell and my salary isn't enough to pay for food and medicines for me and my pets. I really need to file for bankruptcy to have enough money to make my mortgage payments, car payments and payments for medications.

At one time I had 43 pets in my house. My vet bills were huge. But I have less than that now. I just really love animals and I heard from a former client that you love animals too. If I had to do it again I would have taken in fewer animals.

Can I file for bankruptcy if my debt is mostly just because of my pets? You'll see when you look at my credit cards and the loans I took that the money went to help my pets and to animal rescue. It's amazing how much vet bills and pet food and pet toys can cost.

Answer: We are well aware of the high cost of veterinary care and other pet-related bills. We have had other clients who have gotten into financial trouble caring for pets. We are pet lovers so we certainly understand your situation.

The good news is that you should be able to address all of your debt in a bankruptcy filing. That will allow you to make your mortgage payments and car payments.

Depending on your situation, you should be able to file a chapter 7 or a chapter 13. We do a financial assessment to determine which bankruptcy works best for you. We have helped clients eliminate debts from veterinarians, pet stores and other pet-related sources.
