Can I put my credit card debt from Europe in a bankruptcy?

Question: I got into serious credit card debt in other countries and I need to file bankruptcy I think. I’m an American citizen, born here in Roswell, but I travelled to Europe frequently on business and pleasure. I actually spent a lot of time there to meet my wife.

I signed up for some mail order bride services and I visited countries like Latvia, Russia, the Ukraine, Estonia and Lithuania. I wanted to get married and my friend used some mail order bride services and things worked out pretty well for him so I thought I’d give it a try. My plan was that if I didn’t meet a lady in those Eastern European countries, I’d try Central America and South America next, maybe the Caribbean too.

Luckily, I found a pretty woman in the Ukraine and now we’re engaged and we’ll be married soon. But I’ve run out of money and my credit cards are maxed out. I literally have run up my Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express cards to their limits and I don’t know what to do. I’m getting calls every day and a debt collector said he was going to call my employer and talk to my boss. So I’m worried my job could be in jeopardy if my employer thinks I’m a deadbeat. And now my credit score sucks too.

I’m happy I met a great Eastern European woman who speaks English pretty well and has 3 fantastic kids, but I’m really worried about my financial future and I need help getting my finances in order and getting out of debt. I wanted to speak with a Roswell bankruptcy lawyer because I think bankruptcy can help me get rid of this debt from travelling to Europe, but I’m not sure the law will allow me to include all of my debts in a bankruptcy because I racked them up in other countries.

Answer: You don’t need to worry; it sounds like you will be able to eliminate all of those debts from travelling to Europe by filing bankruptcy. Debts that you incurred on your credit cards, whether in a foreign country or even in a different state of our country, are dischargeable in bankruptcy; you can get rid of them through a chapter 7 or chapter 13 bankruptcy.

Many people have credit card debt from vacationing abroad or simply doing business in foreign countries. That debt can be alleviated in bankruptcy. The same goes for debt from other states. Even if the debt is from living or working outside of Georgia, it can still be included in a Georgia bankruptcy.
